THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SPEECH AND LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGIES

December 04-06, 2024

Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai, INDIA

TUTORIALS

Overview

SPELLL 2024 is accepting proposals for tutorials (preferably online) to be conducted alongside the conference. We welcome proposals covering various aspects of Generative AI, Large language models, Explainable AI, Ethics in AI, and related fields. Two types of tutorials can be proposed:

  1. Introductory Tutorials: These tutorials should provide an introduction to related fields that have potential relevance for NLP, code-mixed approaches, computational linguistics, etc.

  2. Cutting-edge Tutorials: These tutorials should focus on the latest advancements in emerging areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP), code-mixed approaches, computational linguistics, and other relevant disciplines.

In both cases, the primary objective of the tutorials is to aid in understanding scientific problems, their tractability, and the theoretical and practical implications associated with them. While presentations of specific technological solutions or systems are welcome, they should serve as illustrations of broader scientific considerations.

To submit a proposal, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. The proposal should not exceed 4 pages of content (excluding unlimited pages for references) and should be submitted as a PDF document

  2. Include a title, authors' names, affiliations, and contact information.

  3. Provide a concise description of the tutorial content and its relevance to the computational linguistics community.

  4. Clearly specify the type of tutorial: introductory or cutting-edge.

  5. Briefly describe the target audience and any prerequisite background they should possess. Specify any prerequisites for the attendees, such as familiarity with specific mathematical concepts, linguistic parsing, machine learning techniques, programming languages, or tools.

  6. Outline the tutorial's structure, content, and how it will be covered within a four-hour time slot.

  7. Explain how the tutorial incorporates the work of other researchers to ensure breadth. The submission should demonstrate that the tutorial is not solely focused on the presenters' own work.

  8. Include a reading list, indicating any recommended papers, with an asterisk denoting essential readings. The list should encompass work by various authors and can include relevant interdisciplinary research.

  9. For each tutorial presenter, provide a brief paragraph stating their research interests, areas of expertise related to the tutorial topic, and experience instructing an international audience.

  10. Provide an estimate of the expected audience size for the tutorial. If a similar tutorial has been presented before, provide information about the previous version's location and the number of attendees it attracted.

  11. Describe any special technical equipment requirements.

  12. Note that tutorial presentation materials, including slides, captioned video recordings, software, data, or other resources, will be made publicly available. If any materials cannot be shared, please explain the reasons.

  13. Include an ethics statement discussing any ethical considerations related to the tutorial topics.

  14. OPTIONAL: Tutorial instructors can include pedagogical materials that the audience can use in classrooms or other discussion spaces to enhance the tutorial's impact (e.g., hands-on exercises, discussion questions, demos, or assignments). If you wish to provide such materials, please explain.

Evaluation of the tutorial proposals will be based on factors such as clarity, preparedness, novelty or timeliness of the topic, instructors' experience, anticipated audience interest, availability of tutorial materials under open access, and considerations of diversity and inclusion.

If your tutorial proposal is accepted, you will be notified by October 15th, 2024. Accepted presenters must submit abstracts of their tutorials for inclusion in the conference registration material by the specified conference deadlines. Tutorial speakers are required to provide tutorial materials at least one month before the tutorial date (dependent on the final venue). The submitted materials must include course slides and a bibliography for the tutorial content.

Important Dates:
  • Submission deadline for tutorial proposals: September 15, 2024

  • Notification of acceptance: October 15, 2024

  • Tutorial slides + abstract + bibliography + any other materials: November 20, 2024.
